Blatantly lying, so that no one says it was their fault. Losing an ipod is not a crime. If I found one on the street, and didn't knew the owner, I would keep it.
Now imagine the previous owner reporting the device as stolen to apple, police coming to my house and locking me up. Just because some rich kid didn't keep his ipod 4 64Gb in his pocket.
Second thing is, how do you prove you are the OWNER of the device you are reporting? It's not a car or a house. What if you bought it as a gift to someone, and after a few months you wanted to screw with this person? Just report to apple and show the receipt. Police at his door, etc etc.
We have to think when we say "apple doesn't give a damn". The law says everyone is innocent until proven guilty. If apple/police/law has no proof that you robbed something, they can't do anything about it. And that is a GOOD thing.

Megan comments on Related stolen iPod articles...

Sorry - this method doesn't work. My sons iPod was stolen. I tried calling it via FaceTime, and the thief answered!! Is there any possible way I can trace it? My son is 7 and he loved that thing. I'd be willing to try almost anything to track down this thief! Please advise!!! The thief even decided to text me via "text free" app too! There has to be a way to track it. Sadly, I didn't register it under mobile me, but the serial number is recorded on my laptop (I just have to find it).

Some one help me please!

A.B comments on Apple removed serial numbers of iPods in iTunes

My Ipod Touch 4th G. 32 GB - Serial # C3XDNT9QDCP9 was stolen on 5/15/2011 while getting off from the InterCity Transit Bus (1) at 12:59PM.
